Designer's Note

Converting your Halogen fixture to LED bulbs?

We recognize that there are thousands of the HD150 type transformers out there and they are failing.  Our customers want to go to a transformer that has the same size and shape but they want to use a LED bulb.  For this reason we sourced this no-load transformer. It is perfect for the LED small wattages and will allow you to still dim your fixtures. You may have to upgrade your dimmer to one for LED, but it will be well worth it in the long run.

If you have any of these HALOGEN transformers HD150 or HD-150 Transformer also similar to Anchorn Model# AET-D1501 150watt 120 to 12volt transformer. MDL 316-0002 transformer (like SL-728 transformer). Jing Neng TJN1150, and PLT BSET150 and want to move up to a LED bulb in your fixture we recommend this driver / transformer the LED TA150WA12LED. It will help with the flicker problem when using a halogen transformer with a LED Bulb. Also note that if your dimmer has a minimum load requirement it may not perform well. If this happens let us know, you will want to isolate any problems. Your qualified electrician will have no problem with installation.

Details

No minimum load electronic transformer.

  • Works with AC LED, AC Halogen or AC Incandescent low voltage lamps
  • ETL, UL recognized
    • UL recognized/listed Class 2 power supply, meets UL 2108 requirements
  • Short circuit protection
  • Auto reset and thermal protection
  • Soft start technology
  • Fully ELV dimmable
  • Low profile, small form factor
  • Advanced no load technology
  • High power factor
  • IP 60 rating
  • Isolated output power per NEC and UL safety requirements
Advantages of electronic transformers
  • Low cost
  • High frequency output - smaller size
  • Lighter
  • Not prone to flicker like magnetic transformers
  • Auto-reset means they do not require circuit breakers like magnetic transformers
  • No minimum load required - convenient
  • Higher efficiency - operate at a lower temperature
  • Available with line filtering for lower conducted and radiated electrical emissions
Where to use electronic transformers
  • Locations that have limited space
  • Locations that are heat sensitive
  • Residential
  • Locations requiring low weight setup
  • Locations that may require transformer to be set up away from source (or close to load)
Disadvantages/When not to use
  • Don't use if location is known to have high temperatures
    • Electronic transformers are heat sensitive
  • May have audible noise
    • Can be resolved with transformer relocation
  • Shorter lifespan (~5-6 yrs)
  • Requires loads to be compatible with high frequency voltages
    • Usually may not work with cheaper LED loads

No-load electronic transformers can only be bench tested with devices capable of measuring at higher frequencies such as a Fluke 289 or better voltage meter. No-load can be measured this way with or without a load on the device.
The reason for this is a lower end meter standard electricians field meter would measure voltage that are DC or 50-60 Hz only and not this transformer.

Measurements done with a field voltage meter will give an incorrect reading or no reading at all.
Please be aware of this when testing the transformer. The no-load is designed for both LED Loads, and halogen / Incandescent bulbs.

However, for standard halogen lighting loads a no-load transformer is not necessary. Total lighting supply offers a video on testing standard transformers. Request the video and we will send it to you.

No-Load transformers can be full loaded to the load specifications. However we cannot guarantee full load performance if your circuit is not engineered correctly for lighting loads, lamp type or wire gauge and length. Proper project engineering is required or downgrading the load on the transformer may be a option.

Example: With a 300watt transformer, one single run at 300watts may required a #10 gauge wire depending on the distance.
Low voltage wire when used on some loads have voltage loss based on load type, wire size and distance from the transformer.
Splitting the load when available may be a good option as the amperage at full load is very high.
